With moulded fibre, SFA Packaging is expanding the possibilities within its packaging range. In addition to our injection-moulded plastic packaging, we are now also developing cellulose-based packaging. In doing so, we are responding to the growing demand for alternative packaging materials and to developments in legislation and regulations, such as the PPWR.
Moulded fibre, also known as paper pulp, is a packaging material made from wood fibres or recycled paper fibres. The material is lightweight, sturdy and suitable for a variety of shapes and sizes. This versatility offers considerable scope for packaging design, but also requires an approach tailored to the material. This is because its properties, production techniques and tolerances differ from those of plastic.
“Plastic packaging remains the most important part of our portfolio, but not every packaging challenge calls for the same material. With moulded fibre, we can take a broader view of each application and develop the solution that best suits the product, the production process and our customer’s requirements,” says Alexander Heinsdijk, Director of Business Development & Marketing at SFA Packaging.
SFA Packaging is already using moulded fibre in a bespoke project for Tony’s Chocolonely. For the advent calendar, we developed a single-material inlay that fits the position and shape of the chocolates perfectly and is tailored to the existing production process.
We are also continuing to develop our range for applications in the food sector. Several customers are currently testing meal trays suitable for use in the oven, microwave and air fryer. In addition, we are working on solutions for other sectors, including horticulture.
