Innovative packaging for Bieze Food Group and Superunie

Bieze Food Group and Superunie wanted a yoghurt packaging that combines logistical advantage with sustainability. At the same time, the packaging had to remain attractive and user-friendly. In the dairy market, lightweight packaging is usually produced in a round shape, as rectangular designs often require more material. The challenge lay in creating a rectangular shape without additional material use or weight.

SFA Packaging developed a rectangular 1,100ml yoghurt container that is almost as light as a traditional round cup. Thanks to its smart shape and optimised wall thickness, this new packaging offers efficiency, sturdiness and a modern look all in one design.

From idea to prototype

Using the same structured approach as in previous innovation projects, SFA Packaging developed a completely new packaging concept: from initial design to tested prototype.

The combination of smart construction and the use of polypropylene (PP) made it possible to realise a shape-retaining, lightweight and fully recyclable packaging. The pots are produced in the Netherlands, using Dutch PP material, a conscious choice that reduces transport kilometres and significantly improves the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) score.

Sustainability as a starting point

The whole chain was central to the development. Thanks to the rectangular shape, 33% more packs fit on a tray, which means less air transport, lower costs and lower CO₂ emissions. Local production and short chain further contribute to low environmental impact. This approach fits perfectly with the sustainability ambitions of both Bieze Food Group and SFA Packaging.

The packaging is also designed with future applications in mind and suitable for with bio-circular material or NextCycle IML, making further sustainability easy to achieve.

Cooperation as a success factor

The cooperation between Bieze Food Group and SFA was intensive and constructive. Both parties combined their expertise: Bieze as a supply chain partner with strong sustainability goals, SFA as a packaging specialist with knowledge of lightweight injection moulding solutions.

"Together we have developed packaging that is not only more sustainable and efficient, but also retains its ease of use and appearance,"
says Christian Braak, Procurement Manager at Bieze Food Group.

This shared vision accelerated development and provided packaging that is both practical and future-proof.

Designed for consumers and the future

Besides logistical advantage, the end user has also been considered. The rectangular pot fits perfectly in the door of a fridge, contributing to ease of use in households.

Besides the current 1,100ml variant, a 500ml version is in development.
