Will you also pay less packaging tax in 2019?

In recent years, SFA Packaging has fiercely defended its position on recyclability in a discussion that is unfortunately too often unsubstantiated. Our main message has always been that our packaging, which consists entirely of one type of plastic (mono-material, i.e. PolyPropylene), is made of extremely recyclable material and is therefore very environmentally friendly. Fortunately, the government does conduct its policy on facts, this has already been shown in its manifestations in recent years. But starting next year, this will also be converted into a financial incentive towards users.

From 2019, there will be a differentiated rate in the waste management levy. This means it will be possible to opt for a lower rate when using plastic packaging. This lower rate will be granted for properly sortable and recyclable packaging with a positive market value. At the time of this writing, the Dutch Waste Fund for Packaging (Afvalfonds Verpakkingen), the inner of this tax, has not yet published the exact conditions for eligibility, but already refers to the recycling check for form-fixed plastic packaging as developed by the Sustainable Packaging Knowledge Institute (KIDV). This check shows whether a packaging is properly recyclable or not. Most of the packaging supplied by SFA is recyclable. In our product range, only black packaging and buckets larger than five litres are excluded.

What does this mean concretely for you? The rate drops from €0.64 per kilo (plastic regular) to €0.38 per kilo (plastic lower rate). As soon as the exact conditions are determined and it is known how you can apply to qualify for the rate reduction, we will inform you through our newsletter. In addition, we are currently working on an online test in which you can test your current packaging against the new rules. This test is expected to become available in early 2019. We will keep you informed.
