Further development of an existing ice cream cup at Van Gils Sweet Creations

Future-proof ice cream cup for Van Gils Sweet Creations
SFA Packaging

Twenty years of partnership in product development

Van Gils Sweet Creations and SFA Packaging have been working together for over 20 years. From that long-term collaboration, SFA became involved in the further development of an existing ice cream cup. The aim was to technically rework the product and make it future-proof for long-term use in production.

The customer demand

Van Gils was already using a similar ice cream cup and wanted to further develop this product for continuity and future use. The question to SFA was clear: develop a new product and realise a technically reliable cup that can be used in the production environment for years without problems.

Development with a focus on quality

The total lead time of the project was approximately one and a half years. During this period, SFA worked intensively with Van Gils to optimise every detail of the design. The focus was consistently on quality and reliability over speed. This approach resulted in a solution that not only functions today, but is also stable in the long term.

Technology and tuning

The biggest challenge was integrating the new cup on the customer's existing filling line. Due to minimal deviations from the old model, the line did not immediately run optimally. SFA adjusted the mould several times and retested each change in production. Technical specialists were on site several times to carefully fine-tune the process. In the end, the packaging ran smoothly within the existing production environment.

IML as added value

A key advantage of the new design is its suitability for IML (In-Mould Labelling). This technique was not possible with the previous cup. IML allows Van Gils extra space for branding and communication on the packaging, without compromising on functionality or processability.

Designed for the future

The ice cream cup is designed as a mono-material solution. The cup and IML label consist of the same material, making the packaging fully recyclable. In addition, the design is prepared for future use of recycled material or bioplastic. This aligns the packaging with future legislation and market developments, including the upcoming European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Cooperation based on trust

The cooperation between Van Gils and SFA was characterised by short lines and continuous coordination. By making choices together and remaining critical of details, a result was achieved that both parties fully support.

"This project confirms that we made the right choice. SFA's commitment and expertise combined with the joint focus on quality clearly contributed to a great end result. Once again, the supplier SFA has proven to go the extra mile for its customers, allowing us to keep our focus on making quality ice cream creations." said the project manager in charge on behalf of van Gils - Ivan van Boxel.

Certainty in the chain

Besides developing the packaging, SFA also made clear agreements on stock management. A fixed safety stock is maintained for Van Gils so that extra stock is always available and production can continue. This project underlines SFA Packaging's role as a partner that looks beyond packaging and actively contributes to continuity in the chain.
