A sustainable solution for a growing demand

An international food manufacturer faced the challenge of developing a new packaging form for a spreadable product. As they already had good experiences with other packaging solutions from SFA Packaging, we were asked to develop a shaker with a hefty 800ml capacity. As well as being durable and user-friendly, this solution had to be able to efficiently dispense a spreading product and offer an option for refilling. The team set to work designing an innovative shaker that would both offers practical solutions as in line is with the customer's strict environmental targets.

The mono-material shaker

The first decisive choice by design related to the use of mono-material for the entire packaging, consisting of a shaker with label and dispensing lid. The shaker is made entirely of one material, which means it is fully recyclable. An eco-friendly packaging was the customer's main requirement. For this reason, we chose a material that is not only durable, but also guarantees the quality and safety of the spreading product. Using mono-material is the solution to this primary requirement, the shaker is environmentally friendly!

Technical challenges and smart solutions

When developing this shaker, we faced several technical challenges. One of the biggest was matching the size of the shaker relative to its contents. Eliminating unnecessary cup space within the packaging was the most important component to avoid wasting material. For this, we created and tested several prototypes to arrive at the best solution. By using advanced technologies, we were able to develop a packaging that, besides being environmentally friendly, is also efficient.

Cooperation and creative development

The project is also characterised by close cooperation between different departments, both within SFA and at the customer. Here, we worked together with different teams which meant that all aspects of the packaging were carefully considered. Through regular consultation and the sharing of ideas, we developed packaging that fully met the customer's expectations.
