The customer demand

SFA Packaging has developed a new concept for 100% recyclable packaging for a major international sugar producer. This new mono-material packaging not only takes a big step towards a sustainable future, but also looks at the optimal user experience for the consumer.

In the context of weight optimisation, the extent to which existing content sizes are still necessary and whether there is room, for example, to reduce the headspace required when filling the product were examined.

Smaller and lighter packaging

This showed that a smaller and thus lighter packaging could replace the existing (larger) packaging without any problems.

Together with its customers, SFA Packaging is constantly looking at innovation and ways to optimise both packaging and its ease of use. In this particular project, in addition to the desire for further sustainability, there was also a desire to improve the "tamper-evident" function and refine the spreadability of the icing sugar. To achieve this, SFA Packaging developed a customised lid.

Clear principles

The customer's existing multi-material packaging no longer meets the desired standard as described in the new sustainability guidelines used by many large retail chains. These require packaging to consist of only one material that is also 100% recyclable. One of the requirements here was to make the "tamper-evident" function more user-friendly, allowing consumers to see at a glance that the product has not yet been opened at the time of purchase. In addition, the brief was to offer the end user multiple options when dosing the icing sugar. Last but not least, the total customisation did not have to affect the production line and the boxes used to get the product to the supermarket shelves intact. In short, a great challenge for a major improvement!

An innovative design

Based on the aforementioned principles, SFA Packaging first transformed the existing tube into a 100% copy in mono-material. In addition, a new lid was designed that meets all the set conditions. This multifunctional dispensing cap, consisting of an ingenious two-valve system with integrated "tamper-evident" functionality, allows consumers to dispense the desired amount of icing sugar. On the one hand, through an opening consisting of 5 larger spreading holes and, on the other, through an opening with 9 smaller holes.

The power of experience and expertise

SFA Packaging has over 25 years of experience in the packaging industry, with a clear focus on injection-moulded packaging for the food industry. In addition to a large range of standard packaging, SFA has extensive expertise in developing tailor-made concepts. Together with our customers, we develop innovative packaging that not only meets the highest sustainability requirements, but also takes consumer convenience to a higher level.
